About me

After a life changing event I re- trained to become a designer in ceramics at Staffordshire University . I had previously worked with constructed textiles at the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design and was keen to become a weaver. I found like many others before me that sitting for hours at a loom was exhausting and beyond my ability to sit still for such long periods . I was grateful that Staffs Uni to took me onto their 3D Craft – Ceramics course and my journey into ceramics began. My biggest influence was working with Phil Eglin who gave me the confidence to trust in the line drawings I have been making for the past seven years.

My work is a celebration of global art . Terracotta was the first clay used to create functional objects for drinking and storing wine and water, sculptures of people were modelled from clay to commemorate events and express creativity. I use terracotta for its references to global ceramic practice and its historical significance. Working with red clay connects me with Eastern and Western potters who have explored its uses over many centuries. The ceramics I produce from my studio in Birmingham are highly decorative and hand painted. Living in Edgbaston village during lockdown, walking around streets full of history I have created a collection of mugs which are bound to the topography and beauty of my local area. I have always been inspired by architecture, the blue plaque tour around Edgbaston enabled me to focus upon local people and their history which I have tried to capture in the images I have drawn into my mugs. With collections that look to domestic settings, local urban gardens and global histories for their subjects, my hand -built forms are all food safe and made to be used.

Commissions are welcome .
